About the Text Readability Scorer
Readability scores are formulas used to measure how easily a piece of writing can be understood. They are widely used by authors, content marketers, educators, and SEO professionals to optimize text for their target audience. A blog post aimed at a general consumer audience should target a different grade level than a legal or academic document.
This tool calculates three of the most widely recognized scores: Flesch Reading Ease (higher is easier, 0-100), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (approximate US school grade), and the Gunning Fog Index (years of formal education needed). All calculations happen instantly in your browser.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste Your Text: Copy and paste any block of text into the input area. Aim for at least a full paragraph for meaningful results.
- Review Scores: The three readability scores update in real-time as you type or paste.
- Check Statistics: Review the word count, sentence count, and syllable count that feed into the calculations.
- Optimize: If your scores indicate text is too complex, try breaking long sentences into shorter ones and replacing multi-syllable words with simpler alternatives.
