About the Text Readability Scorer

Readability scores are formulas used to measure how easily a piece of writing can be understood. They are widely used by authors, content marketers, educators, and SEO professionals to optimize text for their target audience. A blog post aimed at a general consumer audience should target a different grade level than a legal or academic document.

This tool calculates three of the most widely recognized scores: Flesch Reading Ease (higher is easier, 0-100), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (approximate US school grade), and the Gunning Fog Index (years of formal education needed). All calculations happen instantly in your browser.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Paste Your Text: Copy and paste any block of text into the input area. Aim for at least a full paragraph for meaningful results.
  2. Review Scores: The three readability scores update in real-time as you type or paste.
  3. Check Statistics: Review the word count, sentence count, and syllable count that feed into the calculations.
  4. Optimize: If your scores indicate text is too complex, try breaking long sentences into shorter ones and replacing multi-syllable words with simpler alternatives.
